History of North DeKalb Music Teachers Association
TMTA (Tucker Music Teachers Association) was organized at the request of Hilda Gervers, then President of GMTA, in order to have a chapter in the area associated with GMTA and MTNA.  At the organizational meeting, Mrs. Gervers appointed Jean Journey, President, Clarice Hurd (Hunter), Vice-President, and Mary Charles Johnson, Secretary, to serve until an election could be held and constitution drawn.  Others present at the meeting were: Ione Rakestraw, Pam Gilleland, Frances Anderson, and Marsha Hadacheck.  In April, 1964, the Constitution was accepted and the President and Vice-President were elected as appointed by Mrs. Gervers.  Elected in May were Jane Esslinger, Secretary, and Barbara Caine, Treasurer.

The name TMTA was changed to NDMTA because so many members had joined from other sections of the county.

MAMTA (Metro Atlanta Music Teachers Association) was formed representing Atlanta, Decatur, Cobb, North DeKalb, and now Gwinnett and South Metro.  These Chapters comprised a board, which now work together to present workshops and programs, providing better communications among the Atlanta area chapters.

-76 The North DeKalb Junior Music Club was formed.  A monthly newsletter was published.  The "Lunch Bunch" started.  A cookbook of "Quickie Recipes" was printed.  Executive Board Meetings were instituted.

-78 Membership increased to 67 and emphasis was placed on certification.  Our chapter now had 13 state and 5 nationally certified members.

-79 The GMTA State Convention was held at the Northlake Hilton.  The Keyboard Kolossus was held at the Fox Theater, and the involvement of some of our teachers helped "earn" $100 for our Club's scholarship fund.  We now had 16 state and 8 nationally certified members.

-80 We had winners in the GMTA Auditions held in Macon.  Our "You do it" Ensemble program presented in March was "something else!"

-81 We met at Jim Scott Music every month.  Our membership rose to 49, with 11 new members.  Our GMTA National Winner, Vivian Ueng, student of Lois Finlay and daughter of Shirley Ueng, placed third in the National Competition in Phoenix, Arizona.

-82 Our membership rose to 50.  We now had 19 state and 13 nationally certified members.

-83 Chris Wallace, student of Lois Finlay, was the State and Southern Division winner for High School Piano and our representative at the National Convention.

-84 Our club was well represented on the state level.  Jane Coleman headed up the MAMTA vocal auditions and Mary Bush led the student demonstration at the Fall MAMTA workshop.

-85 Our Student Festival had 91 students performing and 75 competing in our local GMTA auditions.  Alecia Stallings, student of Dorothy Budd, was the winner of the MAMTA Composition Contest.  Diane Barnes, vocal student of Bette Chambless, finished second in the state and received $500 in the Penny Art Scholarship sponsored by the Georgia Federation of Women's Clubs.  Christine Ko, student of Lois Finlay, was the 1984 Elementary Piano winner for GMTA.  NDMTA contributed $160 (the largest amount for an individual club) to the MTNA Foundation.

-86 The GMTA State Elementary Piano Division Audition was won by Christine Ko.  Jennifer Ko won the Baldwin Junior Competition.  Both were students of Lois Finlay.  Cricket Greet, student of Bette Chambless, was the High School winner, the Southern Division MTNA winner, and the national MTNA Second Place winner in the Vocal Division.  Vivian Ueng, daughter of Shirley Ueng and former student of Lois Finlay, received a $3000 scholarship from the Pro-Mozart Society for summer study at the Mozarteum in Salzburg.  The name MAMTA was changed to GAMA, of which NDMTA was a charter member..

-88 The GMTA State Convention was held at DeKalb College in November.  North DeKalb co-hosted with Decatur.  GMTA State Elementary Division Audition winner was Ivy Ku, student of Nancy Weintraub, and the Junior Division winner was Christine Ko, student of Lois Finlay.  Christine also received First Place recognition in the Baldwin Junior Piano Competition.  One hundred twenty-four students performed in the Student Festival.

-89 At the GMTA State Convention in November, Ivy Ku, student of Nancy Weintraub, won First Place in the Junior Category.  Winner of the Baldwin Competition was Christine Ko.  Ana Markovic won in the Junior Compositions Category, and her sister, Ivana, won in the High School category.  Christine, Ana, and Ivana were students of Lois Finlay.

-90 NDMTA had 3 First Place winners in the State Convention Auditions: Rita Chen, student of Syang Yin Lin Cheng, was Elementary Division winner; Ivy Ku, student of Nancy Weintraub, was the winner of Junior Division; and Christine Ko, student of Lois Finlay, was the High School Division winner.

-91 Betty Jane Moore's student, Jon Magid, won the Junior GMTA Composition Contest, and Lois Finlay's student, Ana Markovic, won the Senior Category.  Ivy Ku, student of Nancy Weintraub, won the Junior Piano Division at the GMTA State Auditions for the third time.

-92 The Rachel Howard Scholarship Fund was established in her memory, and the contributions were received.  A brochure to advertise NDMTA was distributed to music stores and members.  Berry Jane Moore won the MTNA Foundation Grand Prize.

-93 Seven students of NDMTA teachers were winners in the Bach Competition. Teachers participating were Eriko Roux, Frances Shi, Vicki Key, Lois Finlay, and Linda O'Brien.  Ivy Ku, student of Nancy Weintraub, was the winner of the GMTA State Concerto Competition.  A T-shirt fund-raiser was organized by Mamie Yielding and Nancy Weintraub to bring in contributions to the Rachel Howard Fund.

-94 NDMTA celebrated our 30th anniversary.  LaNelle Nash, Pat Gary, and Linda O'Brien represented NDMTA at the MTNA National Convention in Washinton, D.C. Yu-Kai Lin, student of Syang Yin Lin Cheung, placed first in the 9th Grade Category in the GMTA Spring Auditions.  Teresa Hsu, student of Lois Finlay, was first in the 7th Grade Category.

-95 NDMTA, in its 31st year, continued a long tradition of excellent programs and activities.  LaNelle Nash, Chairperson of the Rachel Howard Scholarship Fund, announced that NDMTA would begin presenting student awards in 1996-97.  In February, 118 students participated in the Student Festival, chaired by Phoebe Dickens, and in March, 82 students competed in the GMTA Local Auditions.

-96 NDMTA inaugurated this "Olympic Year," meeting in Jim Scott Piano's outstanding new facility.  NDMTA hosted the "Ensemble Olympics" with 192 students participating to benefit the Rachel Howard Scholarship Fund. Membership grew to 65.  120 students competed in the GMTA Local Auditions, producing 48 winners advancing to State.  Tiffany Chang, student of Frances Tao, Jacqueline Ludwig, student of Lois Finlay, Slavik Gabinsky, student of Anna Arshavskaya, Crystal Ku, student of Syan Yin Lin Cheung, and Teresa Hsu, student of Lois Finlay, were declared Convention Recitalists.

-97 NDMTA held the inaugural Rachel Howard Scholarship Auditions and four winners were chosen from Grades 5 through 8, respectively.  They were Tiffany Chang, 5th Grade, student of Frances Yao, Jacob First, 6th Grade, student of Margaret Liu, Michael Willoughby, 7th Grade, student of Lanelle Nash, and Danny Tzow, 8th Grade, student of Frances Yao.  These students were invited to perform at the annual "We Do It!" Recital/Meeting in April.  North DeKalb sent 46 Local Winners to the GMTA In-State Auditions and Teresa Hsu, student of Lois Finlay, was chosen as the 10th Grade GMTA Convention Recitalist.

-98 Our second "Ensemble Olympics" was a great success with 167 students participating.  Olympic medals were awarded to the participants.  Eleven teachers represented NDMTA at the 1998 MTNA Convention in Nashville, TN.  We had 23 teachers entering a total of 90 students in the GMTA Local Auditions.  Forty-five students advanced to GMTA In-State Auditions, and Ying Ying Lu, student of Wen Zao Chen, was declared Convention Recitalist.  Teresa Hsu, student of Lois Finlay, won First Place at the Jo Evans Scholarship Audition.  Our first NDMTA evening meeting was held in November with Dr. Earlene Brasher, the Music Coordinator of DeKalb County Board of Education, as our guest speaker.

-2000 NDMTA sponsored several chapter events in addition to local GMTA auditions. Our Ensemble Olympics featured participants performing together in non-competitive recitals.  The Rachel Howard Scholarship Audition, honoring one of our outstanding teachers, selected students in Grades 5 through 8 for monetary awards upon completion of specific criteria, including polished performances.  In addition to these special events, our monthly meetings included programs by Dr. and Mrs. William Ransom, Dr. Geoffrey Haydon, and our own Portia Hawkins and Bette Chambless.  Other meetings focused on teaching tips and performances by our members.  These programs and our May luncheon always offer rewarding exchanges between our colleagues.

-01 NDMTA combined again with the Decatur Chapter for two meetings.  Both programs, Natalia da Roza's "Stylistic Playing of Bach," and Jeannine Morrison's "Winging it Alone," were inspirational and informative.  Our own Vicki Key also gave a wonderful program on her European Music Tour, as did Portia Hawkins with her presentation of "African-American Music."  Besides the auditions and Festival, NDMTA held the second Bach Competition, a very successful event for piano, strings, organ and voice, with nearly 200 students participating.  The next Bach Competition was scheduled for October 26, 2002, to be held at the Roswell United Methodist Church.  Complete information was available that fall.

-02 NDMTA had a unique and successful year.  We held joint monthly meetings with the Atlanta Music Teachers Association.  Our September meeting featured Eugene Martin, who spoke on the "Alexander Technique for Hands." In October, our program "A Posy of Musical Moments," was performed by our own Bette Chambless, soprano, and her accompanist, Ralph Russell.  The November meeting featured the Rachel Howard Scholarship Audition winners, who displayed their acting talents as well as musical skills in the form of skits about famous composers.  Lois Finlay discussed "Teaching the Guide Book" at our January meeting.  In February we had our Local Association Piano Auditions and Theory Tests, and our Student Ensemble Olympic Festival.  Our regular monthly meetings featured a round-table discussion on the topic of "Teacher Burnout."  Our March meeting, Asian Music Presentation, was a first for us and very successful and enjoyable.  In April, we looked forward to a representative from Musikgarten discussing "Group Teaching of Beginners."  New officers were installed in May at our annual spring luncheon.

-03

Our September meeting featured pianists Keith and Priscilla Jefcoat in a lecture recital entitled "Intermediate Piano Duets."  Our October meeting, held jointly with Atlanta Music Teachers Association, featured Douglass Weeks, who gave a lecture recital on Debussy Preludes, Book II.  Our chapter hosted the Bach Competition on October 26 at Roswell United Methodist Church. Our Co-Chairpersons were LaNelle Nash and Ann Steele.  Dr. Tom Pearsall of Georgia Southern University gave a master class for students of our members.  Our January meeting, "Express Meeting," was a time to discuss upcoming NDMTA auditions and Festival along with other auditions that many of our association teachers participate in.  February's meeting, "Summer Show and Tell," featured teachers and students who spoke about summer music camps.  Our Student Festival was held on February 8 at Georgia Perimeter College, Clarkston.  Our Co-Chairpersons were Jean Champness and Margaret Liu.  In March, our guest speaker was David Nash, who spoke on Studio Recording.  Our GMTA Local Association Auditions for piano, held on March 1 at Briarcliff Baptist Church, was chaired by Gayle Vann and assisted by Lois Finlay.  Our April meeting featured several of our own members in our "We Do It!" program.  Our final meeting was our Spring Luncheon and New Officers Installation, which was held at Pappadeux Restaurant in Norcross.

-04

The North DeKalb Music Teachers Association began the year with 48 members. The September meeting featured pianist Jeanine Morrison in 'Teaching Haydn's Sonatas'. In October, the Rachel Howard Competition winners, students of Gayle Vann and LaNelle Nash, presented their musical skits on the lives of famous composers. Dr. Geoffrey Haydon presented 'Improvisation' at our November meeting. Our December Holiday luncheon was held at President Julie Soh-Harbin's house. We started the New Year with our own Lois Finlay giving a very helpful master class to many students. George Mann gave an interesting and informative program in February on 'The World of Schumann' with emphasis on Album For The Young. In order to prepare students for our October 16, 2004 Bach Competition, teachers from all over the metropolitan area were invited to a 4-hour seminar presented by Virginia Hutchings. LaNelle Nash and Gayle Vann presented a wonderful session on 'Teaching Group Lessons' at our April meeting. Gayle brought a few of her students for a simulated demonstration of her group lessons, while the teachers pretended to be students interviewing with LaNelle Nash. They both gave us great ideas for music games to play in group lessons. Our year concluded with the installation of new officers at our May luncheon.

-2005 The North DeKalb Music Teachers Association began the year in September with a presentation by Betty Nolting.  The topic was Foundation for Memorization.  In October, our meeting topic was Put More Heart Into It! – Research on Expressive Piano Performance by Georgia State University professor Erica Keithley.  Upcoming meeting programs include:  Schumann Kindersenen by Tim Wheeler, a Master Class for Intermediate and advanced students by Lois Finlay, Teaching Musicianship by Jeannine Morrison, Let’s Dance! – Eighteenth-Century Dance  by Glen Eckman, and We Do It! in April.  We will finish the current term in May with a luncheon and installation of officers.  Our Bach Competition, held on October 15, 2004, was a success. A total of 206 students competed, and 32 Outstanding Performers were chosen.  The Recital was held on October 17, 2004.  The Solo Festival will be in February, and local auditions will be in March.  Thanks to Leslie and John Kennedy who designed a new website for us:  www.ndmta.com.

-2006 The North DeKalb Music Teachers Association began the 2005-2006 year in September with Dr. Maurice Hinson doing a program on “Sonatas and Sonatinas”.  In October, Dr. Richard Zimdars gave a “Masterclass”, and in November, C.P.A. George Clark talked to us regarding “Tax Matters for the Music Studio”.  Our December luncheon was held at the lovely home of Portia Hawkins.  In January our own Bette Chambless gave a program on “Becoming a Certified Music Practitioner (Playing the Lap Harp for the Ill and Dying)”.  Renowned Dr. Vicki King taught us about “Playing The Piano Naturally” in February and in March, our own Margaret Liu talked to us about “Time Management for Music Teachers”.  Our April meeting featured our own members performing in our annual “We Do It!” program.  We ended our year in May with the Spring Luncheon & Installation of Officers at the Pearl Lian Restaurant.  On October 22, 2005, we held our bi-annual Rachel Howard Competition.  Our format for this year’s competition was students playing Sonatas and Sonatinas.  The Outstanding Performers’ Recital was presented on October 23, 2006.  February 4, 2006 we held our other bi-annual event, the Ensemble Olympics.  Our local auditions were March 11, 2006 with a total of 126 students participating in the auditions and theory.  NDMTA had a busy year with wonderful programs!
